Designed for SurvivalAfter selecting a place on the planet Mars to land, it's time to set up a base and habitat. A proper place is essential for survival. To help you imagine what your ideas might look like in 3-D, you will use some design tools online to create the EXTERIOR (outside) view of your habitat / colony buildings as well as the INTERIOR (inside) of your habitats. Those tools are: Tinkercad.com - you will need to sign up for an account. Use your school account information to make it easier. You will need to remember your log in. Use Tinkercad to design how your buildings and spaces will look from the outside. Floorplanner.com - you can use your Google account to sign in. Floorplanner is a tool to create the interior design of your habitat, including all of the "creature comforts" of furniture, etc. Remember, space is limited in space and no space is wasted. Do your best to use your space efficiently in your habitat. Some concepts and ideas out there:

Mars GeologyMars has some very interesting and uniqu geology. Surprisingly, however, there are also many features and structures similar to Earth's Here's a cool link to some "3-D Anaglyph" images of Mars. *You need special Red/Blue glasses to view them. Picking a PlaceYour team's next task is to pick a place to land and call "home" for your Mars settlement/colony. Geology is important to keep you safe and protected. You should choose a PRIMARY (first choice) and a SECONDARY (second, back up choice) of landing spots. Using Google Earth (Mars view) or MARS.GOOGLE.COM, and other research tools and sites, explore the various geological features of Mars. Pay attention to what's nearby (geological features, rovers, etc.). Consider elevation and any known weather that occurs on Mars. When you've selected an appropriate site, 1. Get the exact link for your view by clicking "Link this view" and copying the unique address. The web address contains the latitude (lat=) and longitude (lon=) of your location. 2. Paste the address(es) into the next Slides of your Team Slideshow. 3. Take a screenshot of the locations you've selected (Primary as well as Secondary) Mac screenshot: Command+Shift+4, then drag a box around the area you want to capture Chromebook screenshot: Other Helpful LinksHow Things Fly - From The Smithsonian InstituteThe links below have some GREAT resources, interactive media, videos, and more to learn about FORCES, FLIGHT, and SPACE! Venn Diagrams are a visual way to organize information by items are similar and different. Your diagram will compare Mars to Earth (Mars on the left circle, Earth on the right). To allow your Team Members to work on this, click on the orange "Share" button in the upper right. NOTE: Since we do not have email, you will GENERATE an ACCESS LINK to copy and paste onto SLIDE 7 of your group slideshow. Mars Mission Teams - Organizing & IdentityThis project will only be as successful as your team is. Leadership, communication, compromise, consensus, and commitment to the project are essential. Think of these things as you choose your groups. Groups may be made up of 4 to 6 students. IF you cannot form groups of these sizes that include everyone (no one being or feeling left out). We will do random selection of your teams. For some activities and assignments, you will receive a group grade as well as individual grades.
Once your group is formed and your seats have been selected, you will need to complete the following: TASK 1: CREATING YOUR TEAM - Branding & Team Identity From your group of 4-6, you will select 2 team leaders / mission co-commanders. One of these individuals will be in charge of starting the team's Google Slideshow to document your work on this project and sharing it to group members to help edit. (Don't forget you could also embed this Google Slideshow on your Weebly websites as well to show your work). The team leader will SHARE the Google Slideshow with team members to present the following:
EACH TEAM MEMBER will also have an individual Google Slideshow in Google Classroom titled "Mars Mission Log". This will be where you make weekly journal entries about the project including how YOU contributed to the team process (for example, if your logo design wasn't selected, that's fine - share it on your individual slideshow) This will only be shared and visible to me. |
